Varicose veins are veins that are swollen, twisted and enlarged. These are usually dark blue or purple in color. Most of the common reasons are old age and overweight. Sometimes even pregnant women develop varicose veins due to excessive pressure on the legs. The blood flow in veins is unidirectional but varicose veins allow backflow of blood leading to swelling. This happens when the valves of the veins start to malfunction. Any superficial vein can be varicose but since most of our body weight lies on our legs, the veins of our legs are more susceptible to be varicose.

For many people, there are no symptoms. If one does not develop severe pain, then varicose veins are just a cosmetic concern.
