What is dry needling? – Is it an effective technique for targeting neuro-musculoskeletal injuries?

Dry needling

Dry needling is a rapid and short-term needling procedure used to specifically target muscular “trigger points”. Similar to acupuncture, it does not include traditional Chinese medicine which involves the injection of needles to stimulate the flow of energy (or chi) through meridian channels.

It is quite  similar to acupuncture as they both involve injecting very fine needles into the skin or surface of the muscles to elevate pain from the body. These methods are even used with other modalities provided by our physical therapists to help you advance in your treatment.

Musculoskeletal injuries

Musculoskeletal injuries are the kind of disorders in bones, muscles, nerves, blood vessels, and soft tissues. Also known as Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI),  musculoskeletal disorders involve  neck and back pains, fractures associated with bone fragility, injuries, and systemic inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis.

The need for dry needling

Dry needling has been a proven technique in treating pain and improving body function in a variety of orthopaedic problems. It can be used as a stand-alone treatment, but very often we combine it with traditional physical therapy treatment plans for better results.

Dry needling therapy is even practiced to relieve chronic muscular tightness in trigger points. Generally, trigger points are the areas that can directly compress your nerves, causing discomfort and pain. For example, people working in the office usually complain of muscle tightness in the shoulders, which is very often an outcome of sitting long hours in the same position all day.

These are some of its additional benefits:

  • Helps reduce pain in lower back
  • Cure headaches
  • Cure neck pain
  • Reduce pain caused due to joint or spinal dysfunction
  • Cures migraines
  • Improves range of motion

Dry needling for Musculoskeletal injuries

Dry needling is a proven and effective process used by physical therapists to cure a wide variety of musculoskeletal disorders. The process is to insert a monofilament needle into the muscle then there is a released flow of pressure that helps decrease active trigger point activity.

It is even used to:

  • Relieve pain
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Relax muscle tension and overactivity
  • improve local immune and healing responses

Hence Dry needling is an effective technique for targeting neuro-musculoskeletal injuries.
